I need to raise $20,000 to keep THIS Gallery open!
So far, the gallery has been funded entirely by myself, through workshops, and through monthly art sales. Sales need to pick up for the gallery to break even and I’m very confident that this will happen. More and more people have been visiting every week. I also have some amazing artists lined up.
The Canada Council for the Arts doesn’t offer financial support to organizations until they have been in business for two years. THIS reaches its two-year anniversary in September of 2023. In the meantime, the gallery needs a little financial boost to pay off some high-interest debt and to stay in business for the next few months.
While other commercial galleries have changed their business model to charge artists a flat fee (in addition to their commission) THIS Gallery’s mandate is to provide a low-barrier exhibition space. The gallery receives a 50% commission only on work that sells.
We don’t charge artists to submit their work and we don’t charge them to exhibit. Period.
THIS Gallery provides opportunities for artists to share their artwork and their skills and ideally, add to their income. However, the gallery exists in a kind of existential grey zone. THIS is a for-profit space with a non-profit mandate. As a result, it falls through both the private sector and traditional arts-funding cracks.
Despite that lack of funding, we accomplished a lot in 2022.
* 7 solo exhibitions
* 4 group exhibitions
* 3 poetry readings
* 4 workshops
* 1 whole month of free art-making for the public
57 artists showed their work at THIS in 2022 and over 300 works of art were exhibited!
Hundreds of people passed through the gallery and experienced art in ways they hadn’t before.
I don’t want to lose the momentum and community already created at THIS. Please, please, please consider helping out in any way you can. I can’t continue without your help!
