The Portland Game Store, a local institution for tabletop gaming in the Portland, Oregon area, almost closed its doors forever due to the COVID pandemic.
In fact, it would have closed if it wasn’t for one of its regulars, Noel Gambone. Rather than see his favorite game store go up in smoke, he used his life savings to buy and save The Portland Game Store. He did this so that players could maintain access to their hobby during this trying time and, most importantly, to be able to save this wonderful space for gathering when in-store play can return.
As one of his first orders of business, Noel used his own card collection to line the display cases and fill the binders. He knows that Portland has an incredibly strong Magic: The Gathering community and he wanted to be sure people had a well-stocked location locally for deck brewing. Then, literally two weeks into assuming ownership and keeping the doors open... The Portland Game Store was burglarized.
Noel dug deep, paid for the repairs, and made sure the supply of cards and product was replenished. Then, just several months later, another break in occurred, wiping out the store's entire inventory of Magic cards and Magic sealed product.
Noel has created this GoFundMe to alleviate the burden of an upgraded security system to keep The Portland Game Store safe, and to help ensure it remains there for years to come.
Of the upgrades, the largest is a product called Defenselite that was installed over all of the windows and glass doors. Defenselite is a thick layer of bullet and shatterproof plexiglass that is fused over any vulnerable location. Additionally, all of the door's locks have been drastically upgraded and a few more security features are still in the works. The current total expense for materials and labor is $8,075.
As a previous owner of The Portland Game Store, I can tell you dealing with theft is one of the worst parts of the job, and prevents you from focusing on what matters most – providing a fantastic location for players and friends to gather. Let’s help Noel raise this money so that he needn’t spend any more of his time dealing with burglaries, and can instead focus on maintaining and growing the best possible space for everyone.
For everyone who contributes $50 or more Noel pledges to create a plaque, "The Portland Game Store Shield Bearers", to display proudly in the store's play space. Additionally, for all contributions $30 or more Noel will be awarding 20% of the contribution amount in store credit redeemable through the website or in-store, usable on anything store wide! Furthermore, any amount that is raised over and above the goal of $8,075 will exclusively be used to upgrade play space features such as tables, chairs, more taps for a greater selection of beverages, etc, to make the in-store play experience as best as it can be!
