Help Keep The Music Alive At Jilly's Music Room

On March 13th, as we were locking our doors and shutting off the lights, we never imagined that we’d still be locked up and dark six months later. Or, that a reopening date would still be so far from sight.
The live music and entertainment industry was the first to shut down, and will be the last, not only to reopen, but to recover. We are, by nature gathering places – where people come and stand or sit in close proximity to both friends and strangers for extended periods of time. Gathering places are not pandemic friendly. It’ll take years to crawl back to pre-pandemic crowds and numbers.
COVID19 is taking a toll on all of us. Many small businesses across Ohio (especially bars, live music venues and restaurants) have already closed permanently and the rest are struggling to stay afloat. Jilly’s Music Room is no exception. We were lucky. We run a tight ship and we don’t carry much debt. We had some reserves. We got a couple of grants. But now we’re staring down a dark winter and a dwindling bank account. There is no revenue, but the bills still roll in every month – utilities, insurance, property taxes, license fees; money we need to spend to keep the building breathing and the business alive. And we’ve had to invest in PPE, social distancing materials, new HVAC filtration, deep cleaning and disinfectant foggers – vital and necessary items that weren’t in the budget.
We can’t wait to reopen - as soon as it is safe, and feasible to do so. Maintaining any small business is always challenging, but this is the toughest challenge we have ever faced. The governor's current guidelines for reopening are onerous and unsustainable - at 15% capacity with a 10PM liquor sales shutoff, they are a recipe for certain failure. Even when we do reopen it will be with limited capacity and new challenges.
Jilly’s opened in 2012 – the latest occupant of a venerable Akron building that has been home to live music for 110 years. Whether you have come to dance to your favorite local band, see a touring show, hear fantastic original music, see your child play in a high school or school of music performance, participate in a jam night, enjoy an Akron PRIDE drag brunch, attend a fundraiser, see a comedy or storytelling show, draw with Dr Sketchy, have been enjoying our #StreamingSaturday series these past few months, or you’ve just popped in for a great cocktail and a bite to eat, we ask for your help so that we can continue to provide a space for the communities we serve.
We need your help to keep Jilly’s alive. We have been closed for six months in order to keep our staff, patrons and the Akron community safe. We have managed to continue paying our bills, but we are at a point where we need help to continue meeting these demands. It is really hard to ask, but we can’t allow our pride to get in the way of maintaining and saving a space where originality and creativity are celebrated everyday through live music.
