John Amagoalik dedicated more than 25 years of his life to creating Nunavut. After 16 months in a long-term care facility in Ottawa, he returned to the territory in June 2026 – but the private funding covering his at-home care has run out. Help us keep one of the “Fathers of Nunavut” home, with his family, for the time he has left. Every donation helps.
John Amagoalik was born in 1947 near Inukjuak, Quebec. In 1953, he was relocated with his family to Resolute Bay, becoming one of the High Arctic exiles. As executive director of the Nunavut Land Claims Project starting in 1974, and later chair of the Nunavut Implementation Commission, he was one of the key Inuit leaders — alongside negotiators such as Paul Quassa, James Eetoolook, Tagak Curley, and many others — who spent decades building the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and helping to design the territory we now know as Nunavut.
Now, at 78, John needs around-the-clock care. For 16 months, that meant living far from home, at a long-term care facility in Ottawa. In June 2026, thanks to a group of dedicated friends and family, John came home to the territory he helped create.
Why we need your help now
John’s homecoming was made possible by private fundraising that covered a nurse, a personal support worker, and rent – but only for a limited time. That support has now run out.
John has already been moved against his will more than once in his life – relocated to Resolute Bay as a small child, sent south for tuberculosis treatment, and separated from his family for residential schooling. His family and friends believe he should not have to leave Nunavut again.

I am a Qallunaaq (non-Inuit/settler) resident of Iqaluit who cares deeply about social justice and equity. I am organizing this crowdfunder as a private citizen with John Amagoalik's approval and consent. All funds collected will be transferred directly to John's medical care team and housing provider, with any surplus funds used for day-to-day living expenses.
