For over 100 years, The Towerlight has told the stories of Towson University’s campus, held power accountable, and documented TU’s history through every generation.
Today, that legacy is at risk.
Unlike most college newspapers, The Towerlight is independent from the university and operates as a nonprofit. That means we answer to students, not administrators. It also means we rely on advertising and community support to keep reporting. In an era where student journalism is shrinking nationwide, that model has become harder and harder to sustain.
And now, we’re facing a financial crisis that threatens our ability to continue publishing.
Why Your Support Matters
The Towerlight isn’t just a newspaper. It’s:
• A watchdog that asks the questions no one else will.
• A platform for student voices — from breaking news to cultural coverage.
• A training ground for the next generation of reporters, editors, and media professionals.
• A historical record of campus life, milestones, and movements.
When student news disappears, so does accountability. So does transparency. So does the documentation of student life.
Towson deserves a newsroom that covers it all — and right now, we need your help to survive.
The Towerlight has been a training ground for hundreds of TU alumni, many of whom have gone on to successful journalism careers. Our former staffers now work at publications such as The Baltimore Sun, The Baltimore Banner, WBAL-TV, The Washington Post, CNN, The Seattle Times, and more.
Where Your Donation Goes
Every contribution directly supports:
• Student reporter and editor stipends
• Website and digital infrastructure
• Training, equipment, and newsroom operations
Your donation keeps our newsroom running and keeps independent journalism alive at TU.
Why Now?
We are part of only 10% of student newspapers nationwide that remain fully independent. That independence is what protects honest reporting. However, it also means we survive only if our community believes in us.
If you’ve ever read a Towerlight story, shared one, learned something from one, or believed in the importance of student voices, now is the moment to stand with us.
This is a critical point in our history. Without your support, The Towerlight may not be able to continue publishing.
Help save the story. Help protect independent student journalism.
Any amount makes a difference.
Thank you for supporting the students who work tirelessly to keep Towson informed.
