Stage Werx Theatre in the Mission District of San Francisco has been a home to many talented performers who have honed their craft, entertained audiences and gone on to the big time to share their gifts with the world. Small theatres like Stage Werx are ground zero for helping to create the entertainment a lot of folks have been enjoying while sheltering in place.
Stage Werx hosts every kind of theatre craft out there. Rock operas, stage plays, new works, solo performance, improv, sketch, stand-up, drunken spelling bees, naked men (and women) reading, circus arts, film and music. Performers from all over the world have tread our boards and audiences know they can swing by for something they can’t get anywhere else. We're also a breeding ground for technical theatre helping new technicians, stage managers, box office staff and others learn these fun and marketable skills.
In the beginning we thought we could weather this storm without tapping into the community for help. Our landlord has been generous, offering a rental discount, but we’ve been informed that this generosity is soon coming to an end. With rent and bills continuing to mount and no revenue, it’s with a heavy heart that we need to reach out to the community to help keep us alive. We will use the money for rent, bills and we'd like to start live streaming solo shows or performers quarantined together. This would entail a single or multiple performers who have been SIP together and one technician who would not be in the same room. There would be at least (and probably longer) 24 hours between people being in the building. All revenue would go 60/40 to the performer/theatre. We believe we can create quality shows as well as keeping performers skills current. Once we get this in place, we'll reach out to performers who would want to stream their show to the world!
With our dying breath we intend to make it to the other side of this situation so we can keep doing what we love with the same passion and dedication. Additionally, we intend to create more opportunities for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) to ensure that our programing is genuinely reflecting and sharing what is happening in this country and around the world. We encourage BIPOC to reach out to us so we can amplify your voices. We’ll see you all when we get the lights back on!
