We need your help to keep Roots operating these next few months.
Usually at this point in the year we would be receiving funds from corporate sponsors of our annual fundraiser event in D.C., but the event has been cancelled. In fact, two important events, a school fundraiser, and a presentation to a large donor have all been cancelled or postponed until a later (unknown) date/month.
The funds from our annual event in D.C. alone allow us to maintain payroll for a couple months, pay for our shared office space, and fund a large portion of programs throughout the year on La Gonave. Without these activities - without your support - we will not have enough funds to cover our expenses these next few months or respond to the needs of our local partners currently preparing to protect the residents of La Gonave from the Coronavirus as much as possible. If U.S. authorities are worried about our ability (capacity) to handle the impact of the virus here, you can only imagine how terrified we are about what is likely about to occur in Haiti.
We are doing everything we can to help share important information about COVID-19 with the community leaders we work with on the island and to provide financial and logistical support to the local authorities who are on the front lines of protecting La Gonave from the virus. We are looking at all the options for support and relief, including potential government funding that may become available, but we do not know if we will be eligible for those funds or when they may come. So we are asking you for your support, for an unprecedented donation that will help us get through these next few months and respond to the needs of our friends in Haiti.
Remember, Roots of Development has always taken your support very seriously. Since our founding, we have done an extraordinary amount of work - had an extraordinary impact - with a minimal amount of resources. Our operating budget is very small. We employee a team of 5 professionals in Haiti for less than $7,500 a month. The amount of money we spend on fundraising and administration is less than 18% of our overall budget and we pay an independent CPA every year to audit the organization, to ensure we are using your funds appropriately and effectively. We truly need your support to get through these next few months. Thank you.
