Help Keep Renee' [MIOIDV] from being homeless

Help keep Renee' Harrington (Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence creator ) from being left homeless.

01/25/2020 UPDATE:
I wanted to thank everyone who has been there for me during the past month. I understand how difficult it is for many people to donate - but I want you to know that your phone calls, emails, posts and messages have meant the world to me. It's difficult to be hundreds of miles away from life-long friends and completely by myself, but your reaching out to me in love and support got me through a very terrifying situation.

One thing this experience made me do was to finally confront the black-balling I was subjected to after a sheriff deputy's attempt on my life. As many of you are aware of, I have run the Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence website  for several years - without any state or federal funding. This past week, I contacted state officials  and informed them that unless my website receives funding, it will no longer be available to them for their OIDV research. I also reminded officials that the actions that had been taken against me and which prevented me from working in my field (law enforcement, criminal justice and victimology) was a violation of my rights under color of law.

And, this past week - after submitting dozens of job applications - I finally got a job.

Regarding the eviction: the hearing is scheduled for January 28th - I will find out then as to what will happen and if the apartment owner will work with me on back rent.

In the meantime, I'm trying to stay positive.

Thank you again for all your support.

Peace and love from the UP northwoods,
Renee'

Asking for help is difficult...
I am raising money to pay my back-rent, pay past due bills, have my truck repaired, and to relocate. After a life-time of volunteering, I find myself unemployed, my unemployment benefits running out, and I am facing eviction by Dec 21, 2019 .

From 2011-2017, I cared for my boyfriend who suffered from advanced diabetes. Contrary to his promises to me and my financial advisor that he would always financially take care of me, he broke his word . As a result, I depleted my life savings.

At the end of the relationship, I moved back home to the Michigan Upper Peninsula. Despite a friend's claim that I could easily retain employment here at a living wage, I found this to not be the case. Instead, I found there were very few employment opportunities which pay above minimum wage, even with my college degrees and extensive background in law enforcement, criminal justice, and victimology.

Most recently, after weeks of being unemployed this year, I was hired as a hotel manager at an area ski resort. It was a position that I loved and enjoyed. Within a week I realized I was in a hostile work environment  where I was subjected to sexual harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. The owner refused to allow me to terminate  an employee for discrimination or even reprimand  her for gross insubordination.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Unemployment Insurance Agency  determined my resigning from the resort was with merit and was attributable to my employer not taking proper corrective actions; however, I was only entitled to the last two weeks of unemployment  remaining on my claim year. Additionally, my savings was wiped out when I paid $1100 for emergency vehicle repairs.

Because of the resort's hostile working conditions, the EEOC and the WI Department Of Civil Rights have issued me an immediate "Right To Sue Letter."

Obtaining employment has been difficult not only for me, but for the other three employees who were forced out of the resort. Reportedly, the owner and employees have been slandering us to insure that we cannot find employment. I've realized I must relocate in order to find work.

In the past, I volunteered thousands of hours to the city and county of Monroe Michigan in drafting domestic violence/crime victim programs  and compiling statistical research  on police department domestic violence calls.

For the past several years, as a result of being a victim of officer-involved domestic violence (OIDV) , I expanded my work. I am now operating a website - Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence Project  - which is dedicated to MIOIDV issues and is a collection of OIDV cases  throughout the state. This website is utilized by city, county and state agencies in keeping up to date on the cases throughout the State.

I have continued to use my knowledge in domestic violence laws to be a voice for victims. In 2010, I reported a Porter County Indiana Magistrate for his failure to uphold domestic violence laws. In retaliation, Portage IN police and my ex-husband entered my home, in violation of a criminal protective order , and my companion and rescue dogs were turned over to my ex. My ex later had my furbabies euthanized  - he was never prosecuted for these crimes.

In 2012 I became involved with the William Windsor/Lawless America case. He re-victimized crime/domestic violence victims with frivolous lawsuits  and cyber-stalking. Windsor's stalking involved jeopardizing the safety of victims and their children. I gathered documentation of Windsor's actions, and forwarded it to the courts and law enforcement agencies.

Currently, I am writing a book on the 2001 unsolved murder case of Bernita Sims White  in which Bernita's estranged husband - MSP Trooper Artis White  - remains a person of interest.

It is my hopes I will be able to find gainful employment soon and be able to continue volunteering in law enforcement and criminal justice domestic violence issues. I am determined to rise above these series of devastating circumstances and not let them take me down. I am a very motivated person who refuses to give up.

Thank you for your help,
Renee' Harrington
