Families on the verge of homelessness. Babies without clean diapers. Parents unable to access medical services. Choosing to pay rent and be hungry. Navigating critical resources in a second language.
For families already facing difficult circumstances, navigating an unfamiliar system in another language can make an overwhelming situation feel impossible. Right now, families in our community need Puertas Abiertas.
Hi, I’m April Kelher, and I’m honored to support Alpine Achievers Initiative (AAI) and their work to strengthen rural Colorado communities.
This fundraiser supports Puertas Abiertas (“Open Doors”), the only program in the Arkansas River Valley specifically focused on providing individualized resource navigation and support to our Spanish-speaking community.
For families facing a crisis, having someone who knows where to turn—and can help them navigate those resources in their own language—can make all the difference.
Puertas Abiertas helps families navigate the barriers that can stand between them and stability, including housing, healthcare, food, transportation, language barriers, and access to community resources.
We've helped families facing housing emergencies. We've helped parents access medical and dental care and secure food and diapers. We've helped children receive scholarships for activities like dance. We've helped single parents build support networks. We've even arranged rides for sick children to get home from school when their parents had no transportation.
Sometimes Puertas Abiertas helps keep a family housed.
Sometimes it helps put food on the table.
Sometimes it helps a child get home safely.
And sometimes, it simply gives a parent someone to call.
For many families, these seemingly small interventions can prevent a difficult situation from becoming a crisis.
But this vital resource is at risk of disappearing.
Due to significant and unforeseen funding challenges, Puertas Abiertas may not be able to continue beyond November 2026.
That means families who currently have somewhere to turn may soon have nowhere to call.
The minimum funding needed to keep the program operating with two part-time staff members is $2,400 per month through August 2027, when additional funding sources are expected to become available.
Our goal: $21,600
This funding will allow Puertas Abiertas to keep its doors open and continue providing individualized support, including:
• Housing and rental assistance
• Medical and dental care
• Transportation
• Food and essential needs
• Opportunities and support for children
• Ongoing resource navigation and family support
$21,600 may sound like a big number. But broken down, it's $2,400 per month to ensure families in our community have someone to turn to when they need help.
Will you help keep the doors open?
Your donation helps keep this resource available to families who may have nowhere else to turn. Families in our community shouldn't have to face homelessness, hunger, medical crises, or emergencies alone.
A donation of any size makes a difference. And if you can't donate, sharing this fundraiser helps just as much by connecting us with people who believe in supporting families and strengthening our community.
Help us make sure that when a family needs someone to call, Puertas Abiertas is still there to answer.
