My name is Makayla Gubbay and I’m a graduating senior at Columbia University. As the world has come to know, international students have come under attack across the United States and especially at Columbia. This GoFundMe is on behalf of a close peer of mine named Nora who fled their home country after their life was threatened due to their ethnicity and religion. They have an asylum case pending, but as of now they are in an extremely precarious situation: all they have is a student visa and even though they have not been involved in the campus protests in any way, they fear that they will be targeted simply for being from a Muslim-majority country and having an Arabic first and last name. To make matters worse, they recently lost the funding for their student housing. Since they are on a student visa, they are not allowed to work, and they fear they will lose their housing over the summer, therefore threatening the status of their student visa and further entrenching their precarity. If you have been feeling helpless watching as the news targets your most vulnerable peers, this is an opportunity to help: we are urgently seeking support from the Columbia community and beyond to keep Nora housed as they navigate these terrifyingly uncertain times.
