Our father, Nelson D. Rickert, has always been the kind of person who lights up a room. He loves people, never missing a chance to strike up a conversation with someone new, and he’s always been there to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. Whether he was riding his Harley, enjoying fast cars, or out dancing with friends, Nelson’s zest for life and kindness have touched so many in our community. For over 25 years, he worked for the state highway department, dedicating himself to serving others both on and off the job.

In April 2025, our world changed when Nelson was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer that had already spread to his brain and liver. He bravely chose to fight, undergoing rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, but the toll has been immense. Since October, he has needed 24/7 in-home care. While hospice has been wonderful, they can’t provide the round-the-clock support he now requires, and his insurance doesn’t cover these essential services. As a family, we’ve found amazing caregivers, but the costs are overwhelming, and we’re doing everything we can to give Nelson the comfort and dignity he deserves at home.
