For the past 40 years, I have run a small salon out of my home, serving my community and building close relationships with my clients—many of whom have become like family. As a 70-year-old disabled woman, my work has always been more than just a job; it’s been a way to stay connected and to care for people who need me. Over the years, I’ve watched my clientele slowly decrease, mostly because many of my dear clients have passed away. This past year alone, I lost three regulars, which has made a big impact on my income and my heart.

Recently, I was shocked to learn that my insurance costs for the beauty shop have increased dramatically, even though I have never filed a claim in four decades. My total income from the salon is now very limited, and after expenses, I’m left with very little. My insurance adjuster told me that if I close the shop, my home and auto insurance would drop by a significant amount. But if I keep the shop open for my remaining clients—some of whom are in their 80s and 90s—l would lose money and actually cost me money out of my Social Security to keep serving them. I’ve thought about going to their homes, but my own mobility challenges make that impossible.

To ask for help is embarrassing for me and l have tried everything I can think of, but I just can’t find a solution on my own. I don’t want my clients to worry about finding someone new at this stage of their lives, and I want to keep caring for them as long as I can.
