Brew's Foot
Sometimes life throws you a curve.
On December 22 after walking my dog I noticed my right foot had swollen up. I started with rest, ice, compression, and elevation. The swelling would go down but would return after a day of being on my feet. I made an appointment on January 16 and X-rays were taken. The Dr. said it was most likely a stress fracture but he wanted to do an MRI to be sure. Monday I had the MRI done and Wednesday received a call that the Dr. wanted to see me immediately. I was diagnosed with Charcot foot. I had never heard of it.
I found this site which explains what I am up against.

Charcot foot is a disease that attacks the bones, joints and soft tissue of the feet. There's no specific cause for Charcot foot. It affects people who can't feel anything in their feet and ankles because of nerve damage.
I have four broken bones in my right foot.

My left foot has also been affected but not as bad. I must go on disability for five months to heal the bones and treat the Charcot disease. It wasn't an easy diagnosis to hear as I certainly didn't want to be away from work and other activities for that long, but when the Dr. said it could possibly lead to amputation if left untreated, it was a no brainer. It's going to be a long road to recovery, I will be needing a series of casts over the the next 5 months or so, then on to physical therapy.
I am a Certified Aviation Maintenance Technician with over 25 years experience. I have lived in my home for 27 years and have been sharing my house for the last 9 years with my dog, Barney. I appreciate any and all help that will enable me to stay in my home while treating and healing this disease.
