For many families in our community, First Steps Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities is the place where they finally feel seen.
It’s where an overwhelmed parent exhales because someone understands their child.
Where a teen finds a safe space to belong.
Where neurodivergent individuals are met with compassion, dignity, and respect — without cost, without judgment, and without barriers.
First Steps is the only agency of its kind in Clatsop County providing free, community-based support specifically for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities and their families. If our doors close, there is nowhere else locally for these families to turn.
Since opening our doors, First Steps has provided free, inclusive support to children, teens, and families who too often fall through the cracks. We are a small, community-based organization, and every program we offer exists because people believed these families deserved more.
Right now, we are asking for help to keep First Steps open a little longer.
We have applied for every grant we are eligible for, but competition for funding is intense. Larger agencies with more resources are often prioritized, and despite strong outcomes and demonstrated need, we have faced multiple funding denials. These decisions are not a reflection of the impact of our work — they are a reflection of how limited and oversubscribed funding has become.
Your support will help cover essential operating costs so we can continue offering:
Safe, inclusive programming for neurodivergent children and teens
Support and connection for families who feel isolated
A trusted community space where acceptance comes first
Every donation — no matter the size — helps buy time. Time to continue serving families. Time to keep doors open. Time to keep hope alive while we pursue sustainable funding.
If First Steps has ever helped you, someone you love, or someone you care about — or if you believe that neurodivergent individuals deserve accessible, community-based support — we invite you to stand with us.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in First Steps and the families we serve.
