Help Keep Doug in his Home
Donation protected
Hi. My name is Nicole and I am asking for your help to keep my stepdad in his home. As some of you know, Doug was diagnosed with Primary Progressive MS in 2008. This form of MS simply progresses over time and does not have any treatment. This disease has progressed a lot over the years which has made Doug wheelchair bound since 2015. It has affected all but one of his limbs. His left arm and hand. You can imagine this does not allow him to be very helpful in his transfers. My mom, Kim has been his only caregiver throughout all of this time. Doug is 6'5" and has grown larger over time since being bound to a chair. My mom is 5' and getting smaller as she is aging. They are both going on 67 years old. The several transfers a day take an extreme amount of physical work and it has taken quite the toll on my mom's body. In the last couple years she has developed a lot of back, neck and shoulder issues. Including 2 herniated vertebrae as well as a nerve injury in her mid-back. In the last year she has had burning of her nerves in her back, Botox injections in her shoulders for muscle issues as well as cortisone injections in her neck. This is causing serious concerns regarding her continuing to care for Doug at home. They have tried to reach out for PCA care but no one will care for him because they do not have any type of lift system to safely lift him. They would like to get a ceiling track lift system (Hoyer lifts do not work safely with his size) in their home and would also need to get him a specialized bariatric rolling and tilting shower/commode chair. In addition there would need to be some minor modifications to their current bathroom to accommodate this new chair. Unfortunately, none of this is covered by Medicare or insurance.
To be completely honest, I stayed at my mom and Doug's house while she was having some of these procedures done in the last year. I was able to be there for days on end and see what goes into caring for Doug on a daily basis. In my opinion this track system will be the only way to keep Doug in his home. The two of them continuing to do this will not be sustainable for much longer. It would truly break my heart to have to see Doug go to a nursing home. Please help in any way you can to help us make it possible to keep him where he belongs…..at home! If you are unable to donate please share this Go Fund Me and help me make this happen. Thank you all and God Bless…Nicole
