My stepdad, Dennis Curry has been through hell the last 4 years. To summarize, he's a diabetic that went into kidney failure, to dialysis, to transplant. He fought for years to get on the transplant list. Test after test after test, days spent at the hospital getting educated, poked, and x-rayed. All while going to dialysis 3 days a week for at least 4 hours each time. Most days not even feeling healthy and energetic enough to drive. But, he persisted and on August 30, 2020 he received the blessing of a new kidney!
Now, here's the dark side of a transplant that often gets overlooked and is rarely spoken about. Once the person is transplanted, they are often considered healthy and then lose many of their benefits. So, for my dad, that meant, loss of insurance, loss of supplemental coverages, potential loss of disability income, and possibly even having to return to the workforce. He is a diabetic patient, and has other ailments that require daily medication. And as we all know, medication is EXPENSIVE.
He is able to remain on Medicare thankfully due to his age. However, that is not enough. His surgery alone was well over $500,000. His insulin is $204/month out of pocket, his required BCBS Medigap coverage to supplement his Medicare is $300/month and his prescription insurance coverage is $30/month. For someone on a fixed, disability income, $534 is just not feasible along with rent, utilities, vehicle insurance, and food. His savings has been pretty well drained paying for the out of pocket surgery expense. But there are some remaining debts to be paid to the hospital as well.
Anyone that knows Dennis knows that he never asks for help. He'd never ever put his hand out expecting anything from anyone. He's worked hard his whole life. And the new kidney gave him a second chance at living. Simply put, he needs help! He wants to remain healthy, give his new kidney a fighting chance, and enjoy his retirement years as much as possible. If you can find it in your heart to donate anything towards his medical expenses, he and his family would be eternally grateful!
