Help Keep Carol @ Gateway Rehabilitation
Upon hearing from the insurance company today, we have no choice but to reach out and start a fundraising effort for our Mom Carol with the hopes of raising enough funds to keep her in Gateway Rehabilitation Hospital. Gateway is an inpatient rehabilitation facility in Northern Kentucky that focuses on treating people recovering from debilitating injuries, illnesses, surgeries and chronic medical conditions. Rehabilitation hospitals provide a more rigorous therapy program than anything offered at a skilled care nursing home with the goal of helping patients ultimately return back home.
Just a brief background of what has brought us to desperately want to be able to keep her where she is finally making progress since she originally entered into the hospital back on Oct. 6, 2020:
Carol had a very long initial stay in the hospital following four surgeries (two bowel surgeries, feeding tube placement & tracheostomy). She has since has been in several nursing care centers trying to get better with no success, not really ever leaving her bed with very minimal therapy. She has been back to the hospital five times, most often with pneumonia and UTI’s. Receiving the strongest antibiotic available during her last admission, the doctors advised that if she becomes immune to the medication, they will not be able to effectively treat her in the future for such infections. For this reason, it is imperative to keep her where she is responding amazingly to therapy. She is up out of bed, sitting in chairs, eating (what she is allowed) and doing everything her therapists have asked of her to help prevent the pneumonia from coming back. The staff at Gateway is AMAZING in every aspect of her care.
It took eight attempts with insurance to get her here and approved (counting appeals) for her first week. Carol passed all her clinical assessments with flying colors and each of the therapy disciplines (speech, physical and occupational) recommended she continue receiving three hours of therapy per day (five days per week). Despite 65 pages of notes supporting the request for another week at this level of care, insurance denied her any additional time. While this facility is top notch, it comes with a very large price of $14,000 a week. For this reason, we are asking for help to be able to afford to keep her at Gateway another week or so to able to give her a fighting chance of being able to go home. Without more time at Gateway, Carol will end up back at a nursing home where they give some therapy (as allotted by insurance) but nothing like she needs to prevent recurring bouts of pneumonia/infections.
The family would like to thank you in advance for any help you are able to give to help fund additional time for Carol to stay at Gateway Rehabilitation—any amount no matter how big or small will help. If by some chance insurance would come through the family would donate every dime of money raised to charity.
