Keep Bocas Wild is a group of individuals dedicated to helping wildlife cope with the rapid development of the Bocas del Toro archipelago of Panama. This development has accelerated in the last 10 years as more people move to these islands. Forests are being fragmented in order to provide infrastructure and housing needed to sustain this growth.
Bocas is known for its diversity of wildlife, including sloths, monkeys, iguanas, anteaters and others. Many of these animals spend the majority of their lives high in the trees where they have everything they need.
In their day to day lives they travel the forest canopy in search of food, shelter and mates. Once the canopy is fragmented, they are forced to the ground to move about. While on the ground, they are frequently attacked by dogs, hit by cars or risk starvation when they can't find their preferred food, and many other life threatening circumstances.
The initiatives of Keep Bocas Wild are re-connecting the forest canopy to allow animals living high in the trees the opportunity to stay safe, healthy, and wild. Building rope bridges or wildlife speedways is an effective way to allow these animals to easily stay high in trees.
Depending on the location and the length of the bridge, cost estimates are approximately $200 to $500 per bridge installed. This work would not be possible without the volunteer participation and in kind donations of people living in these areas.
Your donation today will build bridges tomorrow to help Keep Bocas Wild.
