For those if you who haven't been following Keegan's journey here is a short recap: Keegan was born was with a CHD hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which simply means he was born with a two chamber heart rather than four. In the period of ten days after birth and 4 years old he underwent three open heart surgeries to restructure his heart. He has been blessed since then as he has had very minimal problems with his heart. He had a normal scheduled heart cath procedure this month, which surprisingly he had to get two stents placed. Since then he has been hospitalized twice. This last time he was at school and passed out, turning blue and had a very low pulse rate. He has been in the hospital since. After many procedures they finally found the cause of the issues, a blood clot at the aortic root of his heart. His doctors decided lowest risk was blood thinners to try and dissolve it. They met Monday and we were told he is likely to be hospitalized for atleast a month because it is too dangerous for him to leave due to the risk that the blood clot would move which could cause him to have a stroke, heart attack or many other possible outcomes. So we wait it out. On top of that due to Keegan already having heart anatomy that has been altered during those three surgeries, having the blood clot where it is will cause an unknown amount of scar tissue to form which could lead to the need for a heart transplant. So now they are doing all the testing needed for a transplant in case it becomes needed much much sooner than anyone planned. His mom, my sister Liz has recently started her job so she doesn't qualify for FMLA. She is traveling back and forth from Cedar Rapids to the U of I Children's hospital. When she is working our father and Keegan's grandfather is driving there to be with him. This has become a large financial burden with travel, missed unpaid work shifts and making sure Keegan has the support he needs as a 14 year old who's life has drastically just changed.
