We have room for two dogs.

A year ago we had room for fifteen.

That is the whole problem in two sentences. Right now, every husky we take in would go straight to boarding at $500 a week, because there is nowhere else to put them. So the pipeline is stopped — not for lack of dogs. Arizona has no shortage of huskies in trouble. We have run out of places to put them.

I am going to ask you for money. Every page like this does. But I will be straight with you about what it does and does not do.

Money does not create foster homes. We have to find those here in Arizona, one spare room at a time.

But when a foster says yes, money is the difference between taking that dog and telling the shelter we cannot afford the intake. That is the part you can do from anywhere.

What an intake actually costs

Getting one husky adoption-ready — intake exam, vaccines, spay or neuter, microchip, heartworm test and treatment, parasites, and whatever the shelter did not catch — runs well over a thousand dollars at ordinary vet prices. Add $500 a week in boarding for any dog without a foster home waiting.

We pay less than that. Our partner vets give rescues rates we could never get as individuals, and I will not publish what they are. That generosity only survives if it does not become something the public demands of them — we have already watched one clinic close after giving in on public pricing.

Even with that discount, an adoption brings in $300 to $500. Every dog we save costs us more than it returns. That was always going to be true; adoption fees were never meant to cover it. Donations are what close the gap.

What your money actually does

$500 covers a week of boarding. That is not a donation. That is you keeping a husky out of a shelter run for another seven days while we find them a foster.

Around $1,500 takes one dog from a shelter run to adoption-ready. That is the whole thing, start to finish. One husky, because of you.

Our first goal is $6,500.

That is roughly four dogs. Four huskies we can say yes to instead of no.
