Hello everyone, I was convinced into starting a GoFundMe in hopes of some financial relief. It pains me to even make this because I absolutely hate asking anyone for help, but I think my hands are tied.
Due to my oldest son testing positive for covid shortly after Thanksgiving, I had to quarantine and miss work for 20 days. I was back for a week and half prior to falling ill.
On Christmas Day I started experiencing a sore throat and symptoms that were similar to a yeast infection and/or UTI. The following Monday (12/27/21), I went to the ER for what I thought was a possible reaction to something I ate due to blistering in my mouth and on my lips. Hamot determined it to be Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD) despite being almost 30 years old and my kiddos not experiencing symptoms. By Wednesday the 29th, the pain was so bad I could no longer swallow my own spit so I drove to St Vincent’s ER since it’s closer to my home.
At this point, I now had blisters in my throat, mouth, tongue, lips, hands, feet, legs and arms. I brought up the fact I was on Lamictal and it’s been known to cause a rare but severe, life-threatening rash called Stevens-Johnsons Syndrome (SJS). The doctor assured me I just had HFMD and a UTI after administering IV fluids since I haven’t been able to eat since Sunday evening and drink fluids since Tuesday evening.
On Friday the 31st, I had to call an ambulance because I couldn’t open my mouth, could barely talk and couldn’t walk. Thankfully the doctor in the Hamot ER believed me that this wasn’t actually HFMD and was actually SJS. He immediately started me on IV fluids and pain medication to make me as comfortable as possible. He also explained they will be transporting me down to UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh to their ICU Burn Unit.
