On Saturday night, our family experienced a tragedy that no one should ever have to endure.
My cousin, Kayla, was the victim of an intentional house fire set by her neighbour after the neighbour had been served an eviction notice earlier this month. In an act of unimaginable retaliation, she chose to take the most devastating measures against innocent people.
At 2:00 a.m., Kayla woke up to flames coming through the windows of her home. Inside with her were her young daughter and her niece. In those terrifying moments, Kayla acted with pure instinct and bravery, managing to get everyone out just before the house became fully engulfed in flames. Lives were spared — but everything else was lost.
Kayla didn’t just lose her home.
She lost everything inside it.
Every memory. Every belonging. Every sense of safety.
As if surviving such a traumatic event wasn’t enough, she is now facing another devastating blow: due to a technicality, her insurance company has denied her any payout. She is now a single mom with no home, no possessions, and no clear path forward — all through absolutely no fault of her own.
Kayla is one of the most hardworking, caring, and devoted mothers you could ever meet. She did nothing to deserve this. The trauma she and the children are facing is indescribable, and yet she is being forced to navigate homelessness, loss, and uncertainty all at once.
We are incredibly grateful for the community’s outpouring of support so far — the clothing donations, the kind words, the prayers, and the love have meant more than we can express.
Right now, Kayla needs a village behind her.
Any donation — no matter how small — will go toward helping her secure housing, replace essentials, and begin the long process of rebuilding a life that was so violently taken from her. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser or keeping Kayla and the children in your thoughts and prayers means just as much.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing with Kayla during the darkest moment of her life. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
