My ongoing legal battle to reclaim my son, Kayden, from his father’s care has been a protracted and arduous journey. Despite my sole legal physical custody and court orders prohibiting unsupervised contact with his father, the courts in Ingham County disregarded these directives and placed him in his father’s care.

During this two-year period, my son endured severe physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Despite numerous attempts to alert authorities and seek help, he was met with indifference and disbelief. After a lengthy legal battle, his father’s rights were revoked, and Kayden was returned to my care. However, the court's concerns were not fully addressed from an article-founded allegation not proven. The court expressed dissatisfaction with the services I had completed and demanded that I obtain additional time and resources to meet their standards before he could reside in my home.

Initially, I anticipated a swift resolution to this matter. However, the process has been far more challenging than anticipated. My son was profoundly affected by the state and its care while he was with his father and in this corrupt place we call a justice system, beyond your wildest imagination. It was a stomach-churning realization that I was too overpowered to intervene and that my son’s return home was uncertain. However, I never gave up and my son was returned to my care finally but only to begin what was my worst nightmare. My son, subjected to unimaginable trauma and abuse by his father, succumbed to the common reaction of children who have experienced such hardship. He acted irrationally, unaware of right and wrong. As his mother, I firmly believed that he required assistance and much-needed help. At the age of 13, my son recognized his need for help, and I was determined to secure it.

I reached out to what I believed was a justice system, a place where juveniles were supposed to receive support and guidance on the correct path. However, I was unfortunately separated from my son for nearly four years. They sent him out of state to South Mountain, Pennsylvania, where he attended Abraxas, a specialized treatment facility. I was led to believe that they would ensure my frequent visits, providing transportation and financial support for my family to travel from Michigan to Pennsylvania and keep me involved in every step of the process.

In retrospect, I realize my foolishness. For the next two years, after my son spent almost a year in jail without charge or crime, how could they hold and send him away without a valid reason?
