My brothers, Rowdy, Michael and I are reaching out for a little assistance. If y’all know our family, we really despise asking for any type of help or talking about our personal life, but our mom was recently diagnosed with an aggressive type of Large B-Cell non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Stage IV. Our mom’s type of cancer was located primarily on her breastbone. Within a month after the fast-growing cancer cells gathered on her mediastinal area, the tumor had eaten thru her 4th and 5th rib resulting in a pleural effusion, shortness of breath, and severe pain. After several weeks and various setbacks, she is finally starting her chemotherapy treatments. We were told the chemotherapy is very effective for her type of cancer.
Our mom, Kay Young is a young 74-year-old, who lives in New Braunfels, TX on a fixed income and Medicare insurance. Blue Cross has a high deductible that is almost half the amount of her yearly income. Each part of this journey has been a struggle for authorization from Blue Cross and/or her primary physician. Her first setback was a delay of 2 weeks before her Diagnostic Ultrasound Biopsy, this delay resulted in her spending Thanksgiving weekend within the hospital for shortness of breath and being discharged home with oxygen while waiting for her referral to the Oncology clinic in town.
Her second major setback is that her lung collapsed when they placed port for chemotherapy. This ultimately resulted to a trip to the local Emergency Department the next morning because the pleural effusion of 2 months (that was never addressed because of various authorizations), started draining fluid from her chest tube, severe pain, and increased shortness of breath. Her home oxygen saturations were 72% on 4L of oxygen before we rushed her to the hospital and another hospital stay.
Our mom, Kay has a heart of gold and would do anything to help out or go without to help her family and/or friends in a time of need. It is because of this that my brothers, Rowdy, Michael and I are asking for help. We have been flying back to Texas every other week for the past 2 months to assist with our mom during the various setbacks and her soul-searching journey to start the grueling chemotherapy treatments. I live in Washington state and my brother Rowdy, resides in Minnesota. Her medical expenses, from chemotherapy, hospital visits, etc. are quickly coming in and we were unable to budget accordingly because of the unexpected, aggressive type of cancer. We are asking for assistance to help alleviate some of this stress during this fight. Our goal is $9,000 to cover the high deductible, so that hopefully her insurance will start assisting with the rest of her medical bills.
