I'm one of Kay's students, and I'm asking for your help to support Kay, a young, Brooklyn-based composer, pianist, and teacher who has instilled a love of music in generations of students at her Cobble Hill studio. Now, Kay is fighting for her life as she recovers from two emergency brain surgeries.
For decades, Kay suffered from episodes of dizziness and pressure behind her eyes, but optometrists repeatedly dismissed her pain. It wasn't until she fainted at the airport, and demanded to be seen at a hospital (even though medics said it wasn't necessary) that Kay discovered what was causing her symptoms. An MRI revealed a brain tumor the size of a tennis ball.
The good news is that Kay was able to find a great surgeon. He operated and successfully removed a whopping 90% of the tumor. Kay will need three months of radiation to remove the remaining 10% of the tumor which was too close to her brain stem to address surgically.
But the fight is by no means over. Kay will have to receive occupational therapy in the hospital for weeks and months to come and must continue to pay rent at her business and home while grappling with a loss of income.
As an artist, Kay needs her community now more than ever. Her insurance did not cover the full cost of the operation. The inpatient and outpatient occupational therapy will also cost tens of thousands of dollars. In addition to struggling to get her health back, Kay will be saddled with medical bills for the rest of her life. Like most artists, Kay relies on her income week to week. Let's help her out by giving her a cushion so that she doesn't have to worry about teaching when she needs to relearn skills like walking and talking.
Kay has been a part of Brooklyn's fabric for years. She performs in artist lofts in Brooklyn, and at community events like National Night Out.
All funds raised go directly to Kay.
Thank you on behalf of Kay for helping her get back on her feet after this devastating, life-changing diagnosis. I know Kay will be back to teaching our kids in no time!
Sincerely,
Sabrina
