Hi, my name is Dawn Bevans and I am the mother of Kay Lee Bevans.
Starting August 4, Kay had what she thought what was a cold and a little summer bug. She was experiencing mild symptoms including a runny nose, a little cough, and some minor fatigue.
On August 21 Kay Lee called and asked her Dad (my husband Kevin) to come sit with her because she wasn't feeling well. When her Dad arrived he noticed that she was very short of breath, she couldn't walk across the room without being winded, and she started vomiting. She had also started running a fever. He decided to immediately bring her home.
Monday, August 23, she could not catch her breath. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance and was admitted with pneumonia from Covid-19. The following day she was moved to the ICU and was struggling for every breath.
The fight for her life started Tuesday evening when she was put on a ventilator, sedation and paralytics to get her lungs and brain the oxygen they desperately needed.
Prayer chains immediately got started and everyone we knew was praying mightily for my daughter. Each day we did not know what would happen with Kay Lee. The virus is not a linear event, she was bouncing all over the place. Since Kay Lee is only 26 years old, and was otherwise healthy, her dad thought, "this should be one of us in the hospital".
Kevin and I both got the virus at home but were able to take care of each other and recover.
Because the virus is so contagious, we are not allowed to see her or touch her, and since she was on a ventilator and sedated, she could communicate with us. What a nightmare!
The nurses and doctors are amazing. Not only did they help Kay Lee with her medical care, they were wonderful surrogates giving her the comfort that her Mom, Dad and Sister could not give since we weren't allowed in the same room.
Our family finds comfort in these lyrics by TobyMac; "God is working on your behalf. Heaven is holding conversations about you. Angels have been assigned. Be at peace." And also by Psalms 46:10: "be still and know I am God." Our family repeated these thoughts daily and regularly texted them to Kay Lee. Her Daddy and I are constantly in prayer throughout the day and night. Every waking hour it was the NOT KNOWING that was so incredibly difficult. And also the fear that something dire could happen to our sweet daughter. We did the only thing we knew how and that was to give it over to Jesus.
On day 15 of having a ventilator in the ICU, the doctors determined that giving Kay a tracheostomy was the next move. This would allow her to get off of the ventilator and they would still be able to administer oxygen. Kay is still critically ill, but is responding well to the tracheostomy and the doctors told us they were guardedly optimistic. Her Dad and I decided it was easier for us to drop the word "guardedly" and to just be optimistic that our 26 year old baby was going to get better.
By the grace of God and the expertise of her doctors, 17 days later she's completely off the ventilator and using her tracheostomy as a source for some oxygen help. She is now able to communicate, and she has a feeding tube in her tummy and a pic line in her shoulder. The next step is for Kay to get rehab. She will probably need to learn how to do some of the basics again, like swallowing and talking.
It is just wonderful to know God answers prayers! We can't wait for the day when we can see her and hug her once again.
While we don't have the bills from the hospital yet, that will only be one of the expenses because Kay has a long road of recovery ahead of her. We will give updates as we get more information. Any donation in any amount will be the biggest blessing. Thank you for caring about Kay Lee and our family.
