Please help Katya who is currently being held in a Mexican jail for an expired visa.
Katya is a visual artist, a genuine person, and an amazing friend who has been helping people and inspiring the community of Tulum, Mexico, with her art. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, she was not able to leave the country on time and her tourist visa expired, so Katya was in the process of applying for a work visa in Mexico.
On Thursday, she was randomly stopped by police and asked to present her passport and immigration papers. When she did not have them them with her, she was arrested and taken to immigration jail where she is still being held.
Katya urgently needs to find money for lawyers and fines in order to be released. If she is unable to pay the fines, she could be kept in jail for several weeks and ultimately deported with no right to enter Mexico again. Over the past year, Katya has built her life in Mexico and there is no other place that she can truly call home.
