Hi everyone — thank you so much for being here and for caring about Katrina.
On the evening of December 9th 2025, Katrina was involved in a serious car accident. She was unconscious at the scene and rushed by ambulance to Duke University Hospital where she then underwent a 4-hour emergency open abdominal surgery for extensive wounds to her internal organs (bladder, spleen, intestines, etc.), as well as facial surgery. Katrina also suffered a mild traumatic brain injury and traumatic wounds to her upper body resulting in significant swelling and ongoing pain. Katrina has no memory of the accident or several days following.
Katrina was in the hospital for 8 days – first in the ICU, then the general hospital and is now at home recuperating. The road to recovery will be demanding, both physically and emotionally. Full recovery is estimated to take 2-3 months, although some injuries will require longer-term care (physical therapy, wound healing, etc.)
This GoFundMe is to help Katrina focus on healing without the added stress of mounting expenses. Her car was totaled and without collision insurance the vehicle had to be transferred to the scrap yard to pay for the towing and storage fees incurred while Katrina was hospitalized. Katrina will be unable to return to her two part-time jobs without a vehicle.
Funds raised will help cover:
- Medical bills and hospital expenses not covered by health insurance. These costs are currently not known due to the tangled web of in-network and out-of-network care, but are expected to be in >$1000 and possibly significantly more.
- Lost income: Katrina is currently unable to work, and until she can get a replacement vehicle she cannot return to her previous jobs.
- Vehicle replacement: which is critical to returning to work. This is her largest expense and the most important item for Katrina to get back on her feet. The cost for a new used vehicle is anticipated to be between $8000-$10000.
- Basic living expenses during recovery: these will now include moving costs with the attendant up-front costs such as security deposit and first month’s rent. This is expected to be in the range of $5000.
- Ongoing recovery and rehabilitation needs
- Support services that will make healing easier at home
