Hi! We're Cayce and Katie, two trans women who fell in love during the pandemic and are trying to build a life in Toronto. We're losing our apartment on Feb 1, and are facing homelessness for us and our two cats if we don't raise this money.
Last summer, Katie's employer laid her off - leaving her on a Visitor visa without the ability to work in Canada. The company withheld severance for months, and we went into thousands of dollars of debt trying to pay rent. Katie has been looking for work for 8 months, but companies are not willing to offer her a work visa. As of now, Katie's visitor status is expired and we need to move back to the US.
Cayce was also let go from her job this past winter, after facing inflexibility with her employers re: work arrangements made during the COVID lockdown. She is unable to get on long-term medical leave, and has lost her health insurance. Without that, we are unable to pay for essential medication such as HRT.
We've been making it work by selling our things, doing bake sales, and trying to make content online. The incredible costs of rent and food have made this lovely city too difficult to survive in - we just can't keep up. We are struggling to find jobs at all, not to mention jobs that offer us the money to pay rent. We're out of options.
Here is a breakdown of our plan and where the money is going:
- $400 CAD: Medication
- $700 CAD: Storage unit to hold our mattresses, furniture, boxes, etc
- $800 CAD: Movers
- $4000 CAD: Money to keep us housed in February. This amount equals first & last rent for the average 1br in Toronto, or about what it'll cost to find an AirBnB for the month that will accommodate cats, plus fees, tax, key deposits, etc.
- $800 CAD: moving-related costs like boxes, tape, sharpies, key deposit, airline-approved cat carriers, flights, cabs, etc
That totals up to $6700 CAD, which converts to around $5000 USD.
We will be homeless in less than 2 weeks without this help. This money will give us time to plan a move to the USA, find jobs, and stabilize our housing situation.
Thank you so much,
Cayce & Katie
(and Benny & Violet)
