Help Kathy Rebuild After the Eaton Fire

Donation protected
My mom, Kathy Brockman (Underwood), is a 69-year-old retired public school teacher who has called Altadena home for over 35 years. For nearly four decades, she was a cornerstone of the Marengo Elementary community, known for her warmth, infectious laughter, and passion for both teaching and the outdoors. As a beloved kindergarten teacher, she found her greatest joy in nurturing young minds and seeing the world through the bright, curious eyes of her students.

For Kathy, her home wasn’t just a house; it was a sanctuary filled with memories and irreplaceable belongings. She cherished her antique oven, a quirky piece of history that only worked with a strategically placed brick. Her walls were adorned with art inspired by Native Americans, a reflection of her Oklahoma roots and lifelong fascination with the open West. Most heartbreaking is the loss of countless photographs and family heirlooms passed down from her parents—tangible links to her past now gone. Tragically, the recent Eaton Fire swept through her neighborhood, destroying her home and nearly all that she held dear.

This fire has been devastating, both physically and emotionally. Kathy, who has limited mobility on her right side due to a stroke in 2001, is now grappling with the immense challenge of starting over. She's currently staying with family in Texas as we navigate the long road ahead.

Growing up, we spent countless hours exploring Eaton Canyon, hiking to the waterfall with our dogs. I'll always remember that one large, gray rock we'd slide down on the trail—a simple childhood joy that feels all the more poignant now. It’s deeply ironic that the same canyon that gave our family so many treasured memories is now the source of such profound loss. More than anything, my mom, Kathy, loved her backyard view of the mountains—a constant source of peace and inspiration.

We're reaching out to our community, friends, and family for support as Kathy faces the daunting task of rebuilding her life. The funds raised will help cover immediate needs like clothing, other essential items, as well as the long-term costs of replacing belongings, navigating insurance claims, and hopefully, rebuilding in the community she loves.

We are eternally grateful for any assistance you can offer. Your generosity will not only help Kathy rebuild her life but also provide much-needed emotional support during this incredibly difficult time. Thank you for your kindness and compassion.
