Help Kathy Walk Again: journey to my first smart leg.

Donation protected
On January 21, 2026, I underwent an above-the-knee amputation of my right leg. This was not sudden. It was the end of a long medical battle that began after bilateral total knee replacements over 10 years ago. In 2024, my right knee became infected. I endured a two-stage removal and replacement procedure, three months in a non-weight-bearing cast, and extensive rehabilitation — only to have infection return. Amputation became the safest and only remaining option.

But amputation is only part of my story. I live with incomplete paraplegia at the L2 level. This means permanent nerve damage affecting strength, coordination, and balance. I have complete loss of sensation below my knees and limited sensation above them. I cannot feel pressure, pain, temperature, or the position of my foot on the ground. Every step requires concentration and visual monitoring.
Walking for me has never been automatic. Now, it must be rebuilt — safely.

Because of these challenges, a standard mechanical prosthetic knee would place me at very high risk for falls and injury. My remaining knee replacement requires controlled, stable loading to prevent damage. I cannot reliably stabilize during stance, stair descent, slope negotiation, or sudden movement with lower-level prosthetics. A fall could mean fracture, hospitalization, or loss of the independence I am fighting so hard to regain.

For me, advanced technology is not a luxury — it is a medical necessity. My medical team has recommended an advanced microprocessor knee which provides dynamic stability control, real-time adaptation, stumble recovery protection, and safer navigation of stairs and uneven terrain. These features are critical given my neurologic impairment and vestibular dysfunction. They provide the safest possible path forward toward mobility and independence.

The amputation has also created unavoidable accessibility needs:
1. a roll-in shower remodel to eliminate a step-over ledge,
2. a vehicle hand-control retrofit so I can drive independently

The Funds raised will go towards:
1. Microprocessor knee $40,000 - $75,000 (after insurance cost)
2. Bathroom shower remodel $15,000 - $20,000
3. Vehicle hand-control retrofit (tbd)

I am not someone who is comfortable asking for help. I would much rather be the one giving. But this season of life requires humility. My goals are simple: To walk safely again. To enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. To attend my grandchildren’s sporting events and yes, to even clean my own home and do my own laundry! To be independent.

I am about to learn to walk again for the third time in my life. Every donation — no matter the size — brings me closer to stability, safety, and independence.

If you are unable to give, sharing this page is equally meaningful.

I will continue to post updates as I begin my prosthetic fitting and rehabilitation.

Thank you for your kindness, your prayers, and your consideration. God bless you.
