Hello! My name is Kathleen (Kaki) Castro.

I am 23 years old and I have leukemia (APL).

My story starts in August 2023, right after graduating from Bennington College in Vermont with a Bachelor's in Creative Writing, Literature, Psychology, and Migration Studies. After coming back to Miami, I started experiencing awful joint pain in my legs, and eventually, that pain spread to my arms, back, chest, and even my face to the point where I had to walk with a cane and go to places in a wheelchair. I couldn't chew many foods or go to the bathroom by myself.

I ended up going to the hospital 14 times between August 2023 and March 2024. During those 14 visits, I was never given a diagnosis or real lasting help for my pain. I was even kicked out of the last hospital I went to.

My family resorted to sending my mom and I to Ecuador, where at first I was misdiagnosed with Lupus. I underwent Lupus medications and treatment for two weeks until my face puffed up, my legs hurt to move at all, and the pain was unimaginable. I was sent from one hospital to another in Guayaquil, where my mom was given two diagnoses: I had leukemia and I had appendicitis.

My cancer was found just in the nick of time...

My cancer is currently in remission after a 6-week inpatient stay at the hospital. I am currently in my 4th round of chemotherapy, every day getting closer to ringing the bell that signals that I am cured and no longer have to deal with this horrific illness.

I have my mobility back. I have my life back. However, I am also facing a lot of hardship in the future both physically and financially.

I am not currently working as I am in chemotherapy daily and suffer a lot of symptoms from the chemo ranging from nausea and joint pain to debilitating fatigue and hot flashes.

I have many remaining hospital bill debts that my insurance won't cover. I desperately need to go to an acupuncturist and Functional Medicine specialist to start treatment for my chemo symptoms, and the only thing that brings me real relief are CBD products. All of these are big expenses that my single mother is having to face after all of the previous expenses made to try to diagnose me on top of paying rent and providing for me as I am not able to provide for myself.

It has been an incredibly difficult year for myself and my family. I am so lucky to be here, alive, and in remission.

¡Hola! Mi nombre es Kathleen (Kaki) Castro. Tengo 23 años y tengo leucemia (APL). Mi historia comienza en agosto de 2023, justo después de graduarme de Bennington College en Vermont con una licenciatura en Escritura Creativa, Literatura, Psicología y Estudios de Migración. Después de regresar a Miami, comencé a experimentar un dolor terrible en las articulaciones de las piernas y, finalmente, ese dolor se extendió a los brazos, la espalda, el pecho e incluso la cara, hasta el punto que tuve que caminar con un bastón e ir a lugares en una silla de ruedas. Mi familia recurrió a enviarnos a mi mamá y a mí a Ecuador, donde al principio me diagnosticaron erróneamente lupus. Me sometí a medicamentos y tratamiento para el lupus durante dos semanas hasta que mi cara se hinchó, me dolían las piernas al moverme y el dolor era inimaginable. Me mandaron de un hospital a otro en Guayaquil, donde a mi mamá le dieron dos diagnósticos: tenía leucemia y tenía apendicitis. Mi cáncer fue descubierto justo a tiempo...

Mi cáncer está actualmente en remisión después de una estadía de 6 semanas en el hospital. Actualmente estoy en mi cuarta ronda de quimioterapia y cada día me acerco más a sonar la campana que indica que estoy curado y que ya no tengo que lidiar con esta horrible enfermedad.

He recuperado mi movilidad. He recuperado mi vida. Sin embargo, también me enfrentaré a muchas dificultades en el futuro, tanto física como financieramente.

Actualmente no estoy trabajando porque recibo quimioterapia a diario y sufro muchos síntomas debido a la quimioterapia, que van desde náuseas y dolor en las articulaciones hasta fatiga debilitante y sofocos. Tengo muchas deudas pendientes de facturas hospitalarias que mi seguro no cubrirá. Necesito desesperadamente acudir a un acupunturista y especialista en Medicina Funcional para iniciar el tratamiento de mis síntomas de quimioterapia, y lo único que me aporta verdadero alivio son los productos de CBD. Todos estos son grandes gastos que mi madre soltera tiene que afrontar después de todos los gastos anteriores realizados para tratar de diagnosticarme, además de pagar el alquiler y mantenerme, ya que no puedo mantenerme por mí misma. Ha sido un año increíblemente difícil para mí y mi familia. Tengo mucha suerte de estar aquí, viva y en remisión.
