Here’s a note from Kate:

"Hi, my name is Katherine Roco. I’m an 8th grader at Fowler Middle School. I’ve been playing piano since I was 5, started playing percussion in 6th grade, and am attempting to play acoustic and electric guitar.

I’m more of a visual artist but my older siblings encouraged me to try out for band. My older brother Jacob played percussion too (in middle school, high school and even now in college). He said band is going to be fun.

And he’s right! Band is fun and I have learned a lot too. Having gone through this music journey so far, it has broadened my creativity, taught me discipline, and has grown my confidence even outside of music.

This year I auditioned, and then got accepted into the Honors Performance Series (HPS) and will be able to play at Carnegie Hall! The Honors Performance Series is a prestigious music program that brings together student musicians from around the world, and acceptance is really competitive, only about 30% of students are selected. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I feel so honored to represent my school and my community.

Some of my achievements I’ve accomplished throughout my music/percussion career:

⁃ I placed 2nd chair in drum set for All-Region Jazz Band in 7th grade and 8th grade.

⁃ I made 12th chair in All-Region Band out of hundreds of percussionists across Texas who auditioned in 8th grade.

⁃ I received Outstanding Musician and Outstanding Jazz Musician awards at Fowler Middle School in 8th grade.

I'm currently raising funds to help cover the cost of program fees and travel for this experience in New York City. Any donation, big or small, would mean the world to me and help make this dream a reality.
