Katerina's & Sotiris' Cancer Journey Together
Katerina and Sotiris are couple - both 48 years old living in Athens, Greece - being treated for cancer at the same time.
In February of 2019, Sotiris was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. Further tests showed that the cancer had metastasized to the right adrenal gland. After 9 rounds of chemotherapy and 20 radiation treatments, Sotiris underwent surgery to remove the right adrenal gland only. The tumor found in his lung could not have been removed, as it was attached to a main artery. He is currently living with this tumor in his lung.
In December 2019, the cancer further metastasized into the brain and he again had surgery to remove the tumor. The cancer has now also affected the left adrenal gland; however, he is unable to remove his second gland. Since Sotiris was diagnosed in February 2019, he has undergone approximately 25 rounds of chemotherapy, 20 radiation treatments and 20 immunotherapy treatments. His current treatment plan involves immunotherapy treatment every two weeks.
In January of 2021, Katerina was diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer and stage 2 endometrial cancer. Katerina had a hysterectomy and oophorectomy in February 2021, and began six rounds chemotherapy treatment soon after. After she completes her chemotherapy treatment, she will undergo 25 radiation treatments.
Katerina and Sotiris often attend their treatment sessions together at the cancer centre - in side-by-side hospital beds.
Prior to their cancer diagnosis, Sotiris was self-employed as a Civil and Structural Engineer and Katerina assisted him with his work. Both were passionate about their jobs and loved working together. Outside of work, Katerina and Sotiris very much enjoyed life to the fullest. They both liked to explore new things and do activities together and with friends/family regularly. Katerina and Sotiris do not have children of their own, but have grown to be very fond of their friends' children - and they often take the children on adventures such as horseback riding and swimming etc. The couple also support their friends by taking the children to school and assist with pick-ups. Katerina and Sotiris are also animal lovers, and help/feed stray cats and dogs every day. Katerina and Sotiris are very much loved by all their family and friends.
Due to their health condition, this brave couple is unable to currently work - as they both need to focus on treatment and healing. Since they are both immunocompromised, staying safe during the pandemic is also a priority. While Sotiris has been off work for treatment, the couple have been able to afford treatment with savings. Now that Katerina has also been diagnosed, they don't have any income or any savings left. And unfortunately, they also do not have any health insurance or employment insurance. Upcoming fees include Katerina's radiation treatment; and any upcoming surgeries for Sotiris.
This circumstance where a couple is fighting cancer at the same time is undoubtedly heart breaking. But they are strong and they are fighters. And together they will fight their battle with cancer. They just need a little help from the world.

Η Κατερίνα και ο Σωτήρης είναι ένα συνομήλικο ζευγάρι που ζει στην Αθήνα. Σήμερα, στα 48 τους χρόνια, δίνουν ταυτόχρονα τη μάχη με τον καρκίνο.
Τον Φεβρουάριο του 2019, ο Σωτήρης διαγνώστηκε με μεταστατικό καρκίνο του πνεύμονα (στάδιο 4). Σε επόμενες εξετάσεις ο καρκίνος είχε κάνει μετάσταση στο ένα επινεφρίδιο. Μετά από 9 χημειοθεραπείες και 20 ακτινοβολίες, ο Σωτήρης χειρουργήθηκε για να του αφαιρεθεί το δεξί επινεφρίδιο. Όμως, δεν ήταν δυνατό να γίνει παράλληλη επέμβαση στον πνεύμονα, καθώς ο καρκίνος εφάπτεται σε κύρια αρτηρία.
Τον Δεκέμβριο του ίδιου χρόνου, η μετάσταση προχώρησε στον εγκέφαλο και αντιμετωπίστηκε με νέα χειρουργική επέμβαση. Δυστυχώς σήμερα έχει επηρεάσει και το αριστερό επινεφρίδιο, το οποίο δεν γίνεται πλέον να αφαιρεθεί ως το μοναδικό. Συνολικά, μέχρι σήμερα, ο Σωτήρης έχει υποβληθεί σε δύο χειρουργεία, 25 χημειοθεραπείες, 20 ακτινοβολίες, 20 ανοσοθεραπείες, τις οποίες συνεχίζει ανά δεύτερη βδομάδα.
Πρόσφατα, τον Ιανουάριο του 2021, η Κατερίνα διαγνώστηκε με καρκίνο των ωοθηκών (στάδιο 1) και καρκίνο του ενδομητρίου (στάδιο 2). Η Κατερίνα υποβλήθηκε αμέσως σε υστερεκτομή και ωοφορεκτομή (αφαίρεση μήτρας και ωοθηκών) και ξεκίνησε χημειοθεραπείες για να ακολουθήσουν 25 ακτινοβολίες.
Η Κατερίνα και ο Σωτήρης, πολύ συχνά, αντιμετωπίζουν από κοινού τις θεραπείες τους σε γειτονικά κρεβάτια. Με στωικότητα και αξιοπρέπεια.
Πριν από τη διάγνωση του καρκίνου, ο Σωτήρης εργαζόταν ως Πολιτικός Μηχανικός με βοηθό του την Κατερίνα. Το πάθος για δουλειά και ζωή ήταν το συνδετικό στοιχείο της αρμονικής τους συμβίωσης. Δεν έχουν παιδιά, αλλά πάντοτε είχαν τα παιδιά των φίλων τους σαν δικά τους. Με πολύ αναπτυγμένη τη φιλοζωία και τη τη μέριμνα για τα αδέσποτα.
Λόγω της κατάστασης της υγείας τους, αυτό το γενναίο ζευγάρι δεν μπορεί να εργαστεί. Ο πανδημία του κορωνοϊού, οι επιβαλλόμενες προφυλάξεις και ο εγκλεισμός πρόσθεσαν νέα προβλήματα. Η μη δυνατότητα ασκήσεως εργασίας, η αδυναμία βοηθητικού εισοδήματος από άλλες πηγές, η έλλειψη ασφαλιστικού φορέα υγείας και εργασίας, σε συνδυασμό με τη συνέχιση της θεραπείας και των δύο ταυτόχρονα, έχουν δημιουργήσει νέα οικονομικά αδιέξοδα.
Δύο άξιοι μαχητές της ζωής σε απεγνωσμένο, παράλληλο, αξιοπρεπή αγώνα χρειάζονται και τη σύμπραξη της ανθρωπιάς όλων μας. Αυτή που σπανίζει, αλλά που σίγουρα υπάρχει. Θερμές ευχαριστίες για την όποια οικονομική σας υποστήριξη.

Τον Φεβρουάριο του 2019, ο Σωτήρης διαγνώστηκε με μεταστατικό καρκίνο του πνεύμονα (στάδιο 4). Σε επόμενες εξετάσεις ο καρκίνος είχε κάνει μετάσταση στο ένα επινεφρίδιο. Μετά από 9 χημειοθεραπείες και 20 ακτινοβολίες, ο Σωτήρης χειρουργήθηκε για να του αφαιρεθεί το δεξί επινεφρίδιο. Όμως, δεν ήταν δυνατό να γίνει παράλληλη επέμβαση στον πνεύμονα, καθώς ο καρκίνος εφάπτεται σε κύρια αρτηρία.
