When Kate and Rick had their first official date, Kate asked Rick what his thoughts on children were. Rick informed Kate that he had been told he could not get anyone pregnant, due to a surgery he received as an infant. Kate immediately asked for clarity, “does that
mean you don’t want kids??” “No, I just never imagined it was in the cards for me”. Thus began a relationship, much like so many others. One filled with love, laughter, tears, hard work, and like so many relationships... a quest for “family”
Kate had always dreamed of being a mother. When she learned that Rick could not have children, they chose love and found a way forward. After six unsuccessful IUIs, Kate was able to have their daughter Flora through IVF. Kate and Rick are devoted, loving parents, and Flora is now two years old. Between last August and September, Kate has endured another egg retrieval and two transfers, and both yielded pregnancies. however both ended in miscarriage. They have poured their hearts, savings, and even their retirement accounts into trying to grow their family.
Now, Kate and Rick are hoping for one more chance. The funds raised will help them pursue another round of IVF, covering the costs of purchasing and shipping donated sperm, fertility drugs, egg retrievals, travel to the clinic (which is 2.5 hours away, sometimes daily), the transfer and follow-up care. They have always shown up for others, and now, in this difficult time, I hope our community can show up for them in the most meaningful way.
