Help Kate in the fight of her life! Kate is our dear daughter, sister, grand daughter, niece, cousin, high school teacher and friend.
She is 29 years old and was diagnosed in June of 2019 with Stage 3 Gastric cancer. After undergoing a complete gastrectomy /complete removal of stomach and part of her esophagus and chemo therapy and radiation and multiple tests and scans, she suffered double abdominal abscesses and pleural effusion along with a three week hospital stay, has caused a lot of financial burden on her and her family to cover the cost of past and future treatments that were not covered by her insurance.
After being told she was cancer-free, last month her diagnosis went to Stage 4 Metastatic Gastric Cancer. There is no cure, only treatments. Already having met her deductible twice, she now needs our help as her deductible reset on October 7, 2020. Recently she had to undergo the insertion of a feeding tube. The formula for the tube is not covered by her insurance and will cost her $1500 a month.
She hasn’t eaten normally since last October and now gets all her nutrients and medicine through her feeding tube in liquid form.
Kate has been a warrior as she has undergone so much pain. It is difficult to swallow, but her attitude has been amazingly positive. While we cannot help relieve her medical condition we invite you to contribute anything you can to ease the financial burden from treatments and care.
Kate is a high school history teacher who loves history, her students, the beach and the mountains. She is a graduate of Brigham Young University and is a Greyhound Rescue Mom.
Brad Smith, Kate’s father was the Nose Guard for BYU Football on the 1984 National Championship team. Anybody who knows the Smith family loves them dearly!
