Help Kate Holland Fight Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Ataxia.
Let’s Show Up for Someone Who’s Always Shown Up for Us.
If you know Kate, you know what a rare light she is in this world. She’s the kind of person who gives without hesitation, listens without judgment, and loves without limits. She’s supported countless people through their crises. Now, she’s facing one of her own.
Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Ataxia (PCA) is a rare neurological disorder. It occurs when the immune system, in its attempt to attack an undetectable gynecological organ tumor, mistakenly damages the cerebellum. The cerebellum is the part of the brain responsible for fine motor control, balance, coordination, and speech. The presence of anti-YO antibodies in the spinal cord fluid confirms the diagnosis.
What are some of the daily life changes Kate has experienced due to PCA?
• Limited use of her hands – extreme difficulty making jewelry, writing, and drawing/painting
• Difficulty walking without the use of crutches – movements are slow and unstable
• Inability to carry objects across a room
• Slurred speech
Since February, Kate has endured numerous medical procedures, including surgeries, blood draws, transfusions, and treatments that have both supported and suppressed her immune system. She carries new scars from three major surgeries performed to locate and remove the primary tumor causing her ataxia. Her battle, however, is far from over.
Initially, there was excitement when HER2+ breast cancer cells were found in her breast tissue, but pathology revealed the tumor was occult. As a result, her remarkable team of oncologists, immunologists, gynecologists, and neurologists is now developing a long-term strategy to eliminate the primary tumor and deplete her body of anti-YO antibodies. Although the exact path remains uncertain, her journey will undoubtedly involve chemotherapy, radiation, and other therapies.
Kate has demonstrated remarkable resilience and strength throughout this process. We believe we can alleviate the significant financial stresses she is currently experiencing.
What are some of the financial stresses Kate and Peter are facing?
• Uncovered medical costs, including intense rehabilitation, physical therapy, and counseling, are significant expenses. Additionally, in-home care and mobility assistance are needed. Travel for specialist treatment also adds to their financial burden.
• 100s of medical records are all written in German. Translation services to English are expensive but needed to be shared with US-based doctors to be included in clinical studies.
• Financial pressures are increasing for Kate and Peter as they adapt to a single income. They are considering changes to their living situation to save on expenses.
• Childcare expenses are also a concern, despite the invaluable help from friends in transporting Miles to his school and activities. Further support might be necessary.
• Lastly, Kate's recovery is greatly aided by travel and time spent with friends and family, which was previously funded by her salary.
Kate has dedicated herself to our community, and now it's our turn to support her. Your contribution, no matter the size, will help alleviate her financial burdens, allowing her to focus on recovery.
