Kate Farmer is a beloved Colorado singer-songwriter who has spent the last five years battling debilitating chronic illness—with extraordinary grace, grit, and heart. She is passionate about writing music that helps people feel less alone. She’s also my BFF, my Platonic Life Partner, one of my absolute favorite humans on the planet, and the silliest goose who ever silly goosed. She deserves so much better than what the last several months have given her, and I’ve created this GoFundMe with her blessing to help her through an incredibly rough time.
You may know that, toward the beginning of 2020, Kate was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an incurable and progressive neurological condition. At the time of her diagnosis, Kate was working full-time in accounting and playing as many shows as she could get on the side. She had to progressively cut back her schedule until the end of 2023, when her symptoms became debilitating. At that time, she was approved for LTD (Long-Term Disability) benefits on the grounds that she was permanently unable to work due to her disability.
In March of 2025, Kate received notification that her disability benefits were being cut off, equating to a disastrous loss of 95% of her income. The insurance company cited her work as a musician as the basis for its decision, interpreting the few shows she is able to play each month as evidence that she is well enough to work full-time.
This ignores the reality of MS, which causes unpredictable fatigue, mental fog, pain and days when even getting out of bed is a victory. Her performances—just a few per month—are brief moments of joy, made possible only with long rest before and after. They are not evidence of full-time work capacity.
Kate has contacted a lawyer and submitted an appeal for the decision, but this process can take months. In the meantime, she risks losing her home to foreclosure if she cannot make six months' worth of mortgage payments by late August.
The Goal:
We’re aiming to raise $14,500 to help Kate cover three months of essential living expenses and six months of mortgage payments—four already missed since her disability income was cut off without warning on March 25, and two more while her appeal is under review. Without this support, she’s at real risk of losing her modest condo—the only home she’s ever owned. This campaign gives her a fighting chance to stay housed, regain stability, and focus her limited energy on the appeals process for the income she has unjustly been denied.
We also have a stretch goal of an additional $1,100 (for a total of $15,600), to cover the studio and musician costs for Kate’s first ever recorded release, California. See the “Stretch Goal” FAQ for more detail on this, but basically the idea is to release the song, for FREE, on all streaming platforms, if we can get it funded.

Kate is not asking for pity. She’s asking for a fair chance - and I’m asking you to help give her one. I know that between all of us who love her and appreciate everything she brings to the world, we can help keep her housed and fed until she is able to get this unfortunate debacle with her disability benefits solved.
FAQs:
Why does Kate “look fine” in photos and videos and appear upbeat and “normal” in live performances?
Because invisible disabilities are just that — invisible. And because that’s what performers do. They show up when they can. They smile. They sing. And then they collapse in private. Invisible disability can be hard to understand, but it’s real—and relentless. Photos and videos capture a brief period of time - not the fatigue, brain fog, pain or recovery days that follow. Like many with invisible illnesses, Kate puts on a brave face in public. Her visible joy while performing an occasional 45-minute set does not reflect the chronic struggles that make full-time work impossible.
It can be easy to forget…just because someone looks great on social media, doesn’t mean we know what’s going on in real life.
