My name is Kateri Guy, aka Kat. I am a citizen of the Diné (Navajo) Nation. Up until very recently, I enjoyed an active life being outdoors and working up to 50 hours a week on my feet, lifting, twisting, and bending at a fast pace, which sounds crazy, but it is my reality. I have a side gig that I also enjoy, which is house and pet sitting.
About a month ago, I experienced severe lower back pain. I didn't think anything of it and continued to work as usual. But the pain in my back was on fire, and I couldn't bend, walk, sit, or do much of anything. The pain became annoying and unbearable, so I finally went to the doctor. I thought I would get a bad scolding for being on my feet for too many hours, a remedy to relieve the pain, and be on my way. However, I received news that I wasn't expecting. I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease that could lead to surgery. The doctor told me that if I continue to work as I have been, I would be booking an appointment for surgery sooner rather than later.
Hearing this shook my world because although I’m not as young as I once was, I still have so much more I want to do. It is scary and humbling to realize that I have to slow down and listen to my body, which also means I cannot make ends meet like I had before. I went from working 50 hours per week to 20-25 hours. This is creating a significant blow to my bank account and putting me in a situation that I didn't think I would be in, vulnerable and needing financial assistance. In today's economy, it is hard to find other work and to make ends meet. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats that depend on me, and I have household expenses such as utilities, food, gas, and rent that I don't know how I am going to cover. So here I am, reaching out to my family, friends, colleagues, clients, and others who feel compelled to help a sister out!
