Help Kat create a Queer and Trans Film
Hello and welcome to my project! Thank you for coming! You look amazing! I’ve asked you here today to help me tell a story – a story of identity, self-discovery, and the transgender experience.
My name is Kat and I have devoted my life, soul, and career to the Theatre. Then came the times of COVID and I was forced to pivot as the pandemic caused a domino effect of theatre closures, live event cancelations, and general shutdowns. Now I find myself in the wonderful world of filmmaking, where I’ve completed work on both a network television production and independent feature film. These experiences were incredible but they taught me just how much I have to learn about this industry and everything that goes along with bringing content to your screens at home. As such, I have decided to apply to film school. Naturally, they require a sample of my filmmaking prowess… which I do not have.
So today, I am asking for your help bringing a very personal story to life.
The short film that I wish to direct tells the story of Alex, someone looking for their place in the world. One warm afternoon on the beach, they are plucked from reality to meet Queerness Divine and their Future Self, who begin to guide them on their journey to authenticity.
There is no more powerful medium for change than stories. I originally wrote this one as part of a Queer/Trans writing group and found that it resonated with the experiences of my fellow members. There is a moment that we come to in our transitions – a moment of self-discovery – when we FINALLY understand that Feeling. That moment of clarity breaks most of us, at least a little bit. And then we get to build ourselves back up again in celebration.
I want to visually encapsulate this moment on screen. I want my story and all of the stories that inspired it to be a tool, a resource to those still wrestling with that Feeling; a gentle whisper that says, “You are not alone.”
To maintain the emotional integrity of this piece, I am focusing on only hiring Queer and Trans collaborators. It is important to me to make sure that the creation of this film comes from an authentic place, from people who have gone through this discovery, who can provide and help guide our story with love. To honor their contributions, I want to pay my collaborators for their time and expertise. I cannot offer them what they are worth but with your help, we can bring this story into the world AND they can pay their bills.
How cool is that?
Production will commence in September, with a projected completion date of October 31st. An email containing a link to the final product will be sent out to all who contribute and I do hope you will share it with anyone you may know who is struggling to come to grips with their place in the world.
Thank you so much for anything you can give, even the smallest amounts would help, and I look forward to sharing this story of discovery with you!
With much love,
Kat
