In the early morning hours on Thanksgiving day, my sister Kassie was working her overnight shift as a Labor and Delivery nurse at Methodist Women’s Hospital when she received a terrifying call. The apartment complex she lived in had caught fire. Our other sister, Kaylee, who lives in the same building two floors below Kassie, was watching Kassie’s children while she worked and called her in a panic. Kassie immediately left work to be with her family. In the last 24 hours, the entire property has been deemed unlivable, leaving the residents from all 20 units displaced. Everything both of my sisters owned has been taken from them, due to the recklessness of one person.

This apartment was a new start for Kassie and her three children. To have everything she’d worked so hard to provide her family with, in the name of stability and a fresh beginning, taken away in less than a year’s time is life shattering. When Kassie rented an apartment in the same building as Kaylee, they both thought this was the perfect situation to ease the kids into a new environment—having their auntie and cousin just two floors away. We all agreed! Never once could we imagine that it would leave two of our sisters left with nothing, at the start of the holiday season. It is unimaginable.
