In October 2024, Kasey Wertheim received the devastating news that he had been diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma - a form of kidney cancer that would turn Kasey, Angie, and their family’s world upside down. What started as an unexpected health challenge quickly escalated into a battle for survival.
Since that moment, Kasey has undergone a courageous journey, seeking the best possible treatment. They immediately sought care at Johns Hopkins, one of the leading cancer centers in the country. There, Kasey underwent a kidney removal surgery and thrombectomy involving cardiac bypass in an effort to stop the cancer's spread. But despite his strength and the best efforts of his doctors, the disease continues to progress aggressively with metastases to his liver, lungs, spine, and hip bone.
In just a few short months, Kasey has spent more time in the hospital than out. His body is struggling to keep up with the demands of treatment and the disease. He has been battling fluctuating sodium and potassium levels, which have made regulating his blood pressure extremely difficult. The tumor thrombus is causing a 75% blockage in his IVC and aorta. On top of this, he suffers from severe ascites, a condition where fluid builds up in the abdomen, causing immense pain and discomfort. To help relieve the pressure, he requires treatment approximately every four days, where doctors have to remove an average of about 20 pounds of liquid from his body.
Now, wheelchair-bound and facing more challenges with each passing day, Kasey is in constant need of hospital care, medical treatments, and daily support. The financial burden of ongoing hospital stays, medical procedures, and treatments is overwhelming. It’s a fight he cannot face alone. With short-term disability, he is only getting 60% of his pay, and Angie is out of paid time off to take him to appointments and give him the care he needs at home. They are dealing with so much; they shouldn’t need to worry about finances or how they will meet all the bills.
We also ask that you keep Kasey and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this extremely difficult time.
Many people have asked how to help or what can be done and have tried to find a way to send financial support. This site is created for anyone that feels compelled to contribute financially.
Thank you for your prayers, love, and support. Everyone has already been so amazing and helped Kasey feel so loved.
