Hi, my name is Karl Willis. I was wrongfully convicted of a crime I had no part in and spent 24 years incarcerated for something I didn’t do. Despite clear evidence of prosecutorial misconduct and injustice, the state offered me an Alford plea, which allowed them to release me without admitting wrongdoing and blocked me from suing for wrongful conviction. You can watch Brian Dugger’s investigative series "Guilty Without Proof" on WTOL 11 News which covers my case. You can also search “Dark Pleas” to understand the broader issue at hand.
Since my release, I’ve been trying to rebuild my life from the age of 44 with serious barriers to employment and housing. I’ve been unable to work due to arthritis since September 2023. I’ve been approved for Social Security, but I only receive $275 a month, which isn’t enough to cover even my most basic needs.
I’m reaching out now because I’m in a financial crisis. The funds raised will go toward bills, debts, vehicle insurance, and paying off my vehicle, all critical to stabilizing my daily life.
In the long term, I have a dream: to create a documentary about my life before, during, and after incarceration. I want to share my story with the world not just to raise awareness, but to inspire others going through injustice or reentry. I'd also love to attend the 2027 Innocence Project National Conference. Any additional funds will go toward paying for a spot at the conference and starting the documentary.
I’m deeply grateful for any support whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser. Please keep me in your prayers, and I’ll keep praying for all of you.
