Hi, I’m Kari. This year has been the hardest season of our lives. Earlier in the year in March, my husband Mike faced a major health crisis. He was admitted to the ICU with a blood sugar of 500 and rushed into emergency surgery for suspected necrotizing fasciitis (flesh-eating disease). Thankfully, the infection hadn’t spread, but doctors removed two massive abscesses. He went home with a wound vac and has been learning to manage his diabetes ever since. I’m so proud of his hard work to get healthy.

Just as we were starting to catch our breath, I was placed on medical leave this month. That means we’ve lost the stability of both consistent incomes in the same year. Mike’s paycheck has also been reduced because his employer is still recouping missed premium payments from his medical leave earlier this year.

Right now, we’re barely bringing in enough to cover a fraction of rent and groceries, and medical bills are already at nearly $6,000. In the last two weeks, I’ve brought home $0, and Mike has only been able to bring home $700. With a young daughter to care for, we are in the critical zone financially and feel overwhelmed trying to keep up with bills, food, and basic needs.
