My dear cousin Karen has always been independent, supporting herself as a self-employed cleaning woman. She worked hard and played by the rules, but her health began to fail in numerous ways. Forced to rely on social security and social services, she just barely made ends meet. Then, like so many Americans, she was unexpectedly kicked off Medicaid. The process to reapply was long and difficult, but she finally succeeded. Unfortunately, the setback caused her to fall behind on her condo's HOA fees, and now there are penalties and legal fees she simply cannot pay.
Karen is now facing the threat of foreclosure because of overdue fees and penalties. She has tried everything—pro-bono lawyers, social services, the Department of Aging, and even attempts to refinance or get a reverse mortgage—but nothing has worked. Her request for an extension was rejected, and now she is being forced to sell or rent her home and live with friends, or risk homelessness. I have been doing everything I can to support her, but we are running out of options.
The funds raised here will go directly toward paying the HOA fees and penalties, helping to put off and hopefully eliminate foreclosure on her home. This will give Karen the time she needs to make necessary adjustments to her life and living situation. As a last resort, we are reaching out to friends, family, and anyone who can help. If enough of us chip in just a bit, it could make a world of difference for Karen. Thank you so much for your kindness and support.
