Karen Maple has always been a devoted caretaker to her animals, making sure they have everything they need to thrive on her small property in Bakersfield, VT. Her pony Cody nearly 20 years old, and her flock of chickens have always been her pride and joy, especially through the long Vermont winters. Karen has spent the year preparing for the cold months ahead, storing hay and maintaining the barns that shelter her animals.

Recently, a severe drought made conditions on her property even more challenging. Then, disaster struck—a fire broke out and quickly consumed both of Karen’s barns, destroying her entire winter hay supply and leaving Cody and the chickens without shelter. The fire continues to threaten her home, and with no homeowners insurance and only social security to rely on, Karen is facing an overwhelming situation.

Right now, Karen urgently needs help to rebuild a safe barn for Cody and the chickens and to replace the hay lost in the fire. Every donation will go directly toward providing shelter and food for her animals, helping Karen recover from this devastating loss. Even sharing her story will make a difference and show Karen that her community stands with her.
