Help Karen Overcome Cancer

Donation protected
Dear generous community,

We (Karen's family) are asking for support in Karen's cancer recovery in Mexico.

While it is clear to anyone that knows Karen that she gives wholeheartedly, generously, and tirelessly to those around her, it may be less obvious that she has great difficulty asking for that level of generosity and support towards herself (a quality many people may relate with). Therefore, we are asking for help on her behalf.

Karen was diagnosed with Aggressive Stage 2 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma on September 13th. This came as a shock to all of us. Since the diagnosis, she has had 2 surgeries. Starting in November, she began 3-hour intravenous treatments 2-3 times a week. She has just done a major stem cell transplant, and her next steps involve an expensive medication protocol before re-testing and deciding next steps. Her doctors have great hope in this treatment protocol as it has a very high success rate with this type of breast cancer. Unfortunately, the bulk of this treatment plan is not covered by health insurance and is a significant financial expense.

As some of you are aware, Karen and Grant founded Refuge of Hope in 2020, a charity centre for children and families in 2020. This center serves some of the most vulnerable people in their community, providing food, education, child care, skills training, as well as psychological and medical support to those whose situations are heartbreaking. The level of poverty these people experience is mind boggling and incredibly difficult to grasp. (To find out more about this project, check out the link below).

Karen has continued working with the young children and their families since the diagnosis.

Amazingly, she was able to choose a treatment path that allows her to continue this work. Karen has voiced the fear that donations towards her healing will take away from donations to the little ones, but we know there is more than enough support to be shared, and that ultimately, Karen's health is one of the biggest gifts we can give these children right now.

As Karen recently stated in one of her blogs, “Generosity should not be a privilege of the wealthy but the experience of every human heart. We receive. We give.” Help her receive today as she faces this illness head on. If there are any extra funds after her healing is complete, they will be donated directly to Refuge of Hope.

Thank you so much for reading and giving so generously. Together, we can make a difference.
