My name is Kara, and I’m reaching out for help to keep my home and care for my dog, Mason. On May 24th, Mason and I were attacked by a group of dogs, leaving both of us with serious injuries. Mason, my marble pitbull and service dog, needed three surgeries and daily procedures for weeks. I also needed medical care, and the costs quickly drained my savings, 401K, and any help I could get from friends. I previously ran a GoFundMe to help with Mason’s medical expenses, and while the support was generous, it still wasn’t enough to cover everything. My boss initially approved my time off, but by the end of July, I was laid off because of the time I missed for our recovery. Since then, I’ve been fighting for unemployment, but my claim was denied.

Mason is more than just a pet—he’s my companion in sobriety and my service dog. I adopted him right after leaving rehab in May, and he’s been by my side every step of my recovery. The attack left him with severe separation anxiety, but he’s still the sweetest, kindest dog. We’re both struggling, and the stress has taken a toll on my mental health. I’m battling depression and anxiety, and Mason is still recovering emotionally, too.

Right now, we’re at risk of eviction. My rent is overdue, and I’m facing late fees and the possibility of losing our apartment—the only place I’ve ever truly felt safe. My car insurance has lapsed, making it impossible to drive for work, and my phone and electricity bills are due. I also need to cover Mason’s yearly shots, food for both of us, and my student loan payment. Without a working phone or car, finding a job is nearly impossible. If we receive support, it would mean the world to us. It would help us stay in our home, keep the lights on, and allow me to start working again while staying close to my AA group, sponsor, and support system.
