Help Kapitu Village Go Waste-Free

Donation protected
Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters of Sustainable Communities,

We are Dan & Barbara Fritschen, retirees from California who enjoy traveling to developing areas of the world to help communities become Waste Free.

We are reaching out today to ask for your support of the village of Kapitu, a beautiful coastal community in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, that’s facing both environmental and economic challenges.

With your help, we can bring about positive change by funding a waste management system and providing much-needed roofs made from 100% recycled plastic materials.

This project will help improve living conditions, reduce ocean pollution, and create a sustainable solution for the community members such as 13-year-old Aca and her family.

About Kapitu Village:
Kapitu is a coastal village with a population of around 2,400. The village is nestled near one of the world’s most stunning coral reefs, but like many impoverished communities, it faces significant environmental challenges.

45% of Kapitu families live below the poverty line, and the village has no official waste management system. As a result, trash is often burned, buried, or dumped directly into the ocean, which not only harms the local environment but also threatens the delicate marine ecosystem that the village depends on.

This is where Manengkel Solidaritas, a dedicated environmental NGO based in nearby Manado, has stepped in to help.

Through their Pencils for Plastics program, they’ve been working with local children to collect plastic waste in exchange for school supplies. This initiative has been a huge success, with many local kids excited to participate.

However, the community’s needs go beyond just waste collection — they now need the tools and resources to recycle the plastic waste into useful products for their homes and village.

The Solution:
Manengkel Solidaritas has already made great strides by teaching locals to recycle plastic waste using a heat press and shredder.

The goal is to turn this plastic waste into essential materials like roofs and trash bins. These products will help:
  • Reduce pollution by keeping plastic waste out of the ocean
  • Provide better living conditions with roofs that lower interior temperatures by up to 18ºF (10ºC)
  • Create a sustainable waste management system that can be maintained and operated by the community
  • Support local employment by training Kapitu residents in recycling skills
One of the first successful projects was assembling and installing a recycled plastic roof for a family in Kapitu.

This roof not only protects the family from the elements but also helps lower the stifling heat inside their home, which can reach 90ºF (32ºC). With your help, we can extend this benefit to many more families.

How You Can Help:
We are aiming to raise $5,000 to fund the next phase of the project. Your donations will go toward:
  • Building 100 trash bins from recycled plastic waste to help the village collect and sort waste for recycling
  • Building 10 roofs made from recycled plastic waste for families in Kapitu, including Aca’s family, whose home is in desperate need of protection from the heat
  • Purchasing a heat press and shredder for the village to help with the recycling process
  • Training two local employees in Kapitu to operate the equipment and manage the recycling process
  • Covering electricity costs for the production of bins and roofs
Every Dollar Makes a Difference:
$10 = 10 trash bins to help keep the village clean
$50 = A portion of the cost for one recycled roof
$100 = Training for a local resident in using the heat press or shredder
$500 = Materials for 5 roofs or 50 trash bins

Why This Project Matters:
This initiative is more than just about providing roofs or bins — it's about empowering the local community to create a sustainable, self-sufficient system. It’s about giving the children of Kapitu a chance to learn about recycling, protecting their environment, and taking pride in their work. And it’s about ensuring that the village, which depends on its coral reefs for food and livelihood, can preserve the marine environment that sustains them.

How You Can Contribute:
Please consider making a donation today, no matter how big or small. Every contribution is a step toward creating a cleaner, cooler, and more sustainable future for Kapitu.

Additionally, please share this campaign with your friends and family to help spread the word and bring even more support to this cause.

On behalf of the families in Kapitu and the dedicated team at Manengkel Solidaritas, thank you for your generosity and commitment to making the world a better place. Your support will make a lasting impact on this incredible community.

With heartfelt thanks,

Dan and Barbara Fritschen
