Help Kami’s Family Through Her Medical Crisis

My name is Angela and I am trying to take some stress away from my sister and brother-in-law.

My 18-year-old niece Kami went to the hospital with abdominal pain on November 21st and ended up having appendicitis. She had to have emergency surgery to have her appendix removed. On November 28th, her mom received a call that the pathology came back showing neuroendocrine carcinoma (cancer), but the surgeon said he was confident that they got it all.

On December 3rd, she had her follow-up appointment with the surgeon. Even though she was still having pain, he thought everything looked good. The next day, she spiked a fever and was taken back to the hospital. She was then transferred to a larger hospital by ambulance because they discovered a large pelvic mass and she had sepsis. On December 5th, they performed laparoscopic lysis of adhesions, drainage of abscess, and right ovarian cystectomy. Cultures grew E. coli and strep constellatus, and pathology also showed an abscess with necrotic tissue. She then stayed in the hospital until December 11th.

Not even 24 hours after being home, Kami came down with a fever and nausea, and they had to go back to the hospital. They found that the pelvic abscess had returned, so they had go back in and put a drain in. She was discharged with the drain in on December 16th. This time, she made it until December 20th, and once again, a fever returned, and she had to go back in. Now they are finding a large left loculated effusion and she will be having a thoracentesis on December 22nd to see if it is an infection that has now traveled up to her lungs or if something else is going on. This means they will now be spending Christmas in the hospital.

I know that was a lot of medical language. The simplified version is after having her appendix taken out, she ended up with an extremely bad pelvic infection and sepsis, and now the infection has possibly traveled to her lungs or something else is going on.

If you do not know Kami, she is the sweetest, kindest soul you will ever meet. She is soft spoken and gentle. She would use her last dollar to get something for a family member with no questions asked. She is a 2025 Holton High School graduate, the youngest of 4 girls, and she has 2 nephews that adore her.

Her parents are now in need as they live an hour away from the hospital she is at. Her mom is not leaving her side, so she is having the cost of eating at the hospital daily. Her dad works full-time and is traveling to the hospital to see her. Her mom was in the middle of starting a new job when Kami first got sick and has now lost that opportunity, so she has not been working and does not know how long it will be before she can get back to work.

Please consider helping this family out. Money will be used to help cover the cost of medical bills that are not covered by her insurance, gas for getting to and from the hospital and the doctor appointments afterward, food, and bills that are starting to fall behind from already having these added costs for the last month.

I know how hard it will be for her parents to even accept this help, as they hate asking for help, but they need it, so I will ask for them. Even the smallest donations help. I understand times are hard, and if you are not able to financially contribute, could you please say a prayer for Kami and share her story.
